Grand Junction, Colo. – Top-seeded Colorado Mesa women's soccer, defeated 8-seed Fort Lewis Sunday afternoon, in the quarterfinal round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament by a 1-0 score.
The Mavericks racked up 25 shots on the day, while their opponent managed just four on the afternoon. Of the total shots, eight were placed on goal by the Mavs and the Skyhawks didn't get much of a good look on goal, but put three shots between the posts. CMU held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Lexi Newton and
Lila Dere tallied six shots each, Dere placing four shots on goal.
Chloe Dody did not see too much action throughout the 90-minutes, the defense of Devyn Parson, Michaela
Dangler and
Mira Houck going the distance and keeping the Skyhawks out of striking range.
Haley Klasner intercepted a pass midfield, setting her self up for a clear shot up the middle. The midfielder took advantage of the space taking a shot from beyond the box, putting enough height and pace on it to soar over the keeper and into the back of the net.
Her game winner would hold up for the rest of the time, as the Mavericks claimed their 14
th victory of the season.
Colorado Mesa will host the semifinal round Wednesday on Community Hospital Unity Field, taking on No. 4 seed Regis who took down the Thunderwolves of CSU Pueblo in their quarterfinal matchup by a 4-1 score.
