Grand Junction, Colo. – It was a good weekend at home for Colorado Mesa men's basketball as they capped off a 2-0 weekend with a 80-56 triumph of Simon Fraser University Saturday evening in Brownson Arena.
The Mavericks finished 32-of-50 from the field for a 64 percent clip, sinking 10 three-pointers going 50-percent from deep. The visiting team out of Burnaby, British Columbia were held to a 35.5 clip from the field, but did finish with a 35-24 edge in rebounds.
Owen Koonce had a career night off the bench, leading all scorers with 20-points on 8-for-9 floor shooting.
Blaise Threatt finished with 13-points,
Reece Johnson the other Mav with double-digits with 10. Johnson was a flawless 4-for-4, draining both his three-point shots. Threatt collected seven rebounds to lead the team, to go along with two steals and five assists.
Simon Fraser hung tight with the Mavs early on, behind three consecutive three-pointers from Jasdeep Singh.
After a block from
Mac Riniker,
Jared Small converted a layup on the opposite end to give the Mavs a 13-point advantage and would be the difference in score going into the break, after Riniker capped off the first half scoring with a steal and a statement dunk.
The Mavericks lead would only grow in the second half, having a difference of 20-or-more throughout a majority of the period.
Behind efficient shooting, the Mavs secured their 16
th straight home victory over the last three seasons and move to 6-3 on the season. They will open conference play on the road next weekend, heading to Colorado Christian and MSU Denver.
