GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Four starters scored in double figures as the Colorado Mesa women's basketball team raced past the Southwestern Assemblies of God University American Indian College Warriors 99-33 in the home opener of the Holiday Inn Thanksgiving Classic in Brownson Arena.
The 99 points is the most by the Mavericks in the 10-year tenure of head coach
Taylor Wagner and is the highest point total in exactly 10 years. The Mavericks scored 111 points in a win over Oklahoma Panhandle State on November 26, 2011.
Senior
Kelsey Siemons finished with a team-high 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field including 3-for-5 from three. Eight of her 13 came in the first period of action where the Mavericks built a 35-14 lead.
Daniella Turner and
Mariah Martin each finished with 12 points. Turner closed out with six rebounds, five assists and four steals while Martin finished just shy of a triple-double with eight rebounds, nine assists, and a steal in her Brownson Arena debut.
The Mavericks built a 59-20 halftime lead and led by as many as 69 with 2:44 to play in the fourth quarter on a made bucket by
Sophie Hadad who played in her first game since injuring her knee a year ago.
Colorado Mesa played 14 players in the game and 13 of them record points. Local products
Leah Redding and
Sara Geddes each had eight points off the bench.
The Mavericks improved to 4-0 on the season.
The Mavericks will finish the weekend out with a matchup against Montana Western at 5pm tomorrow. The Bulldogs come into the matchup as the No. 24 team in the NAIA National Rankings and defeated Adams State in the first game of the day, 71-61.
