Grand Junction, Colo. –The Colorado Mesa men's soccer team came from behind and netted the golden goal in the 98
th-minute to avenge their early loss the Fort Lewis Skyhawks Friday evening on Maverick Field.
Joey Joiner netted the equalizer in the 63
rd-minute, forcing the extra minutes where he would come up with the golden goal to give his team the 2-1 victory. 26 shots were taken by Maverick players, Joiner being one of four players to take a team-high four shots. CMU landed 10 shots between the posts, as Fort Lewis landed just four of their 18 shots on goal.
Connor Durant made two of his three saves in the second half, and tacked on his third in the overtime period.
Matched nearly shot-for-shot, the teams went back and forth throughout the first half but were unable to break through.
The first brace of the night would come just four minutes into the second half, as Tomas Duenes-Gonzalez lucked out on a shot that tipped off the gloves of Durant.
The Skyhawks had another opportunity to score turned away, opening up a series of shots by the Mavericks. Relentless on offense, six different players recorded shots leading up to Joiner's goal at the 63-minute mark, collecting the ricochet from
Alec Fronapfel's initial shot.
As the team's fought for the difference maker, a delated foul in the box gave way to a penalty kick for the visitors. Gabriel Legendre, the Skyhawks leading scorer would set up for what could have been the go-ahead goal, only to have his shot hit the top post and back out into play, as the Mavs escaped the threat.
With the game knotted at 1, the team's headed into extra minutes to determine their fate.
After getting rattled around earlier in the game,
Daisuke Takanaka returned to the pitch, taking a shot early in the overtime period, narrowly missing high over the crossbar.
The deciding goal would come with just under two-minutes left in the period, as
Isa Trujillo sent a ball up from midfield, finding
Leo Mireles who settled the ball and moved it into the middle where
Aaron Martinez tapped it over to Joiner who grabbed his third goal of the season, and the game-winner for the thrilling overtime win.
The win keeps the Mavericks unbeaten in conference play, as they head into Sunday to faceoff with the Grizzlies of Adams State at 12 p.m. on Maverick Field.
