Record Breaking Performance Gives Mavs 10th Win

New goals, assists and points records set in 9-0 win

Grand Junction, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's soccer team had a record-breaking performance in Sunday's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game, completing their second consecutive 2-0 weekend with a dominant 9-0 shutout of the visiting Adams State Grizzlies.

Collectively the team put nine goals past the Grizzlies, tallying 10 assists for 28 points. The previous highs came in a 7-0 defeat at Colorado Christian (CCU), where the team put together 20 points on seven goals and six assists. The Mavericks combined for 36 shots between 19 players, tying the program record that was set back 2015, also against CCU.

Adams State was kept to just four shots all game, their only two shots on goal coming in the second half. Zach Carr, who started in goal for the Grizzlies came up with some big saves early on, turning away some early strikes for seven saves.

In the opposite goal, Connor Durant would take away two saves for his 10th win and sixth shutout between the posts. Rhett Cook came in to relieve Durant of his duties early in the second half, not seeing much action as the visitors didn't apply much pressure at the goal.

Eight different players were behind the team's offensive success, leading the way was Ross Elliott who put in a career best two goals, to go along with an assist. Leo Mireles assisted on three of the goals, taking matters into his own hands on a free kick in the 64th-minute for his second score of the season. His three assists match a program high, the last current player to do it was
Ramses Atahualpa back in Sept. 2019 against Northwest Nazarene.

Elliot and Mireles each tallied five points, tied for 7th most in program. The most recent to do it was Alec Fronapfel when he put together five points against Regis on April 17, 2021 with a pair of goals and an assist.

Elliot netted his first goal of the season in the 50th-minute, running down a pass to slide it in past the Grizzly keeper. His second brace came in the 89th-minute, taking advantage of an open goal. Tristan Widic grabbed his first goal of the season in the 72nd-minute, soaring above the ASU defenders for a header inside the far post.

Josiah Henderson and Berkler Fuller IV secured their first goals in a Maverick uniform, Henderson timing a header of his own and a far cross from John Roberts. Fuller's goal came in the 83rd-minute, making the most of a 1v1 opportunity thanks to a pass from Diogo Silva.

David Peters opened the scoring in the 14th-minute, getting up to connect with in inbound corner kick from Gabriel Peres. Later in the half, Jannick Lange recorded his second tally of the season on an identical situation to Peters, Mireles being behind the corner kick. Three of the Mavs nine goals were scored off of corner kicks.

The Mavericks remain at home, hosting Westminster in a midweek matchup on October 13 at 6 p.m.
