Mavericks Make it Five Straight with Win over Westminster

Takanaka, Fronapfel net goals in team's 2-0 shutout

Grand Junction, Colo. – The No. 12 Colorado Mesa men's soccer team stayed hot, despite the chilly temperature Wednesday evening on Maverick Field, coming away with the 2-0 victory over Westminster. The win pushes the team to 11-2 overall, and 5-0 in the conference.

Each team tallied seven fouls, and four corner kicks, the Mavericks having the upper hand with nearly double the shot count and one more shot on goal.

Daisuke Takanaka captured his second goal of the season, taking advantage of a misplayed ball by a Griffins defender. Just two and a half minutes into the game, Takanaka used a 1v1 and a low shot between the goalkeeper's legs, giving the Mavs an early lead.

His goal would hold strong for the rest of the half, as the defensive core kept the Griffins to just five shots in the first period.

The Griffins would attempt a couple more shots in the second half, but had their work cut out for them in the defensive third as the Mavs had 12 strikes in the half.

Alec Fronapfel pushed the lead to two in the 83rd minute, controlling a chip over the last line of defense by Colton Shafer and staying onside enough to get into the box and net his sixth goal of the season.

In the final minutes, the Griffins almost had a ball slip through but the Mavs got the clear and a foul in their favor to uphold the shutout. Connor Durant secured three saves on the night for his sixth clean sheet, and brings his record between the posts to 11-1.

The Mavs will take a day to travel over the mountains to continue conference play at MSU Denver Friday at 4:30 p.m.
