Denver, Colo. – Friday's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup took the No. 12 Colorado Mesa men's soccer team to MSU Denver, where they claimed a 5-0 victory and the weekend sweep.
The Mavericks tallied 16 shots to the Roadrunners 11, and landed 10 shots between the pipes. Friday's match is the second time CMU has put together a five-goal performance, their first coming against Simon Fraser back in mid-September. There were threats to score more, but the Mavs were turned away by seven offside calls.
Alec Fronapfel and
Fernando Morales combined for six shots, Fronapfel coming away with his 7
th goal on the season, while Morales put together a brace – just three minutes separating each of his goals.
Jannick Lange picked up his third goal on season,
Colton Shafer joining in on the offensive success with his second of the fall.
Fronapfel got the scoring underway in the 26
th-minute, teaming up with
Joey Joiner as they traded passes off before Fronapfel beat out the MSUD defender and keeper for the first tally.
Later in the half
Ethan Anderson played a nice cross into the box, a couple of CMU players getting a touch before Lange squared up and blasted a low ball into the twine – putting the team ahead by two.
Goal number three was scored off a free kick, the Mavs forcing a couple of deflections before Shafer made it past the Roadrunner's keeper.
Morales' first goal of the afternoon came in the 74
th minute, thanks to another pass in from Anderson. Just three minutes later, he came way with his second goal, fourth of the season, on a high lob in from
David Peters on the opposite side.
Connor Durant snagged two saves on the way to his second clean sheet of the weekend, and 7
th overall on the season.
The Mavericks will take the next week to prepare for matches against South Dakota School of Mines and Regis, Friday and Sunday respectively.
