Women's Soccer Upsets No. 5 UCCS!

Mavs take down second top-10 ranked opponent Sunday, defeat Mountain Lions on the road

Colorado Springs, Colo.  –  UPSET IN COLORADO SPRINGS! For the second time this season, the Colorado Mesa women's soccer team overcame the odds to take down a top-10 ranked opponents, this time completing the upset over No. 5 UCCS, Sunday afternoon at Mountain Lion Stadium.

Each team put up double figure shot totals on the day, UCCS edging out the Mavericks 20-15. However, CMU placed two more shots on goal, as well as got to the corner seven times to their opponents, four. Lexi Newton led all players with five shots, landing four on frame, scoring her first goal of the season in the process.

Michaela Dangler, Mira Houck and Devyn Parson remained on the pitch from start to finish, aiding in the defensive efforts that kept the Mountain Lions to their second lowest scoring game of the season. Two days prior, UCCS has a come from behind effort in a win over Westminster. The Griffins were the first to score multiple goals against UCCS – that is until the Mavericks rolled into town put in three past the keeper.

The Mountain Lion's offensive prowess was shown early as they got on the board just under the six-minute mark. Not long after the Mountain Lions threatened to put another on the board, but a big team save preserved the score.

On a long pass up from the Mavs defensive half of the field, Lila Dere handled the ball near the far corner but passing it back to a wide-open Lexi Newton. With just one touch and a far-ways out, Newton put enough pace and height behind the ball, catching the top post and out of range from Chloe DeShazer.

With the score leveled coming out of the break, the Mavs fended off some early threats by their opponents eventually making their way down the field and presenting their own threats at the goal.

Just as the home team scored early in the first, the visiting Mavs would take the lead at the 50-minute mark on a long range shot from Haley Klasner, a similar scenario to Newton's. The goal marked Klasner's second of the season.

UCCS would put in the equalizer just six minutes following Klasner's goal, as the physical battle continued.

Entering the final 10-minutes of play, UCCS almost came away with the game-winner off the sliding shot from Kaitlin Hinkle. Fortunately for the Mavs, the ball would trail right and bounce off the woodwork – giving them a goal kick.

1:30 remaining on the clock, CMU moved their way up the field, Klasner handling the ball in the middle of the field, and passing it up to an open Tatum Pfalmer who remained onside enough to get a one-on-one opportunity, taking a left-footed shot towards the far post and ricocheting past the line for the game-winner.

The goal would hold for the final minute of play as the Mavericks bounced back in a big way from Friday's loss, defeating the No. 5 ranked Mountain Lions by a 3-2 score, and hand UCCS their first conference loss.

The Mavs move to 2-1 in conference play, 5-2 on the season and will look to take that momentum into next weekend when they face another pair of tough conference opponents in Colorado School of Mines and Regis.
