Grand Junction, Colo. – 2007. That was the last time the Colorado Mesa women's soccer team claimed victory over Colorado School of Mines. Sept. 10, 2006 being the last time the Mavericks tallied three goals over the Orediggers. Friday's win snapped a 12-game losing streak, as the Mavs defended their home turf and put together a complete game in the 3-1 win.
The Mavs used a 18-10 advantage in shots, and applied a significant amount of pressure at the goal taking 13 on target, while keeping the opposition to just five looks between the posts. In addition to their offensive success, CMU also got to the corner eight times to CSM's one.
Lila Dere led the team with eight shots, all but one being on target.
Lexi Newton also posed as a threat, taking five shots and placing three on goal. Reese McDermott and Emma Peterson each tallied four shots for the Orediggers to lead the offense.
CMU would take the opening shot, but Mines would respond with four shots of their own, a couple threating to break through.
There were a couple of good looks for the Mavericks, one being turned away by an offside call. Shortly after, the Mavericks would regain possession and make their way back into the box. In the 26
th-minute,
Lila Dere took a strike at the ball, putting enough pace behind it to rebound off the Orediggers keeper, giving an open goal to
Mikayla Eccher who capitalized on the second chance.
Four-minutes following, the Orediggers used a 1-2 punch to even the score.
The teams would go into the break holding a 11-7 advantage in shots, and would not let up going into the second.
Just about 10-minutes in, Dere would become the goal scorer settling a pass from
Carli Dare and using the left post to score her sixth goal of the season, and the go-ahead for her team to take the 2-1 lead.
With the lead, the Mavericks back line kept the Orediggers from getting a clear look at the goal, forcing them to take shots from afar, but none connecting.
Dere would make it her second, two-goal games adding on a cushion goal in the 84
th minute, getting a one-on-one chance in front of the goal off a pass from
Sophia Beames who stopped a clear attempt from just outside the box. Dere tucked it in yet again, giving the team the 3-1 advantage.
Mines would be withheld from taking a shot in the final six-minutes, as the goals upheld for the remainder of the game and gave the home team their third conference win.
The team will look build on their success, and take the momentum into Sunday's game against Regis. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Maverick Field.
