Grand Junction, Colo. – It was a fight to the finish in Sunday's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action between Colorado Mesa and MSU Denver. The Mavericks who look to close out the regular season with an undefeated home record, capped off that feat with one goal to secure the decision over the Roadrunners.
The visitors out shot CMU by an 18-11 margin, however the Mavs placed more shots on goal and made four saves to preserve the shutout. Thought quite the physical matchup, there were just eight fouls called, seven of them going against the Mavs.
Up against her former team, it was only right that
Mira Houck came away with the game-winner, scoring 21-minutes into play, winning a battle in the box.
Sophia Beames took the initial shot, forcing the deflection that landed at Houck's feet for the second-chance score.
After the early score, the Roadrunners amped up the offensive pressure racking up a majority of their shots in the second half. They would have a couple of good looks, but could not convert.
The Maverick offense put on threats of their own in the attacking third, Kayla Caballero making some big saves to uphold the 1-0 score.
Chloe Dody captured four saves on the day, on the way to the team's fourth straight shutout, the third for her.
The Mavericks will take to the road for their final three contests of the regular season, heading to Adam State and New Mexico Highlands next weekend. They have already secured a spot in the RMAC tournament, along with Colorado School of Mines, Regis, CSU Pueblo, and UCCS.
