Durango, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's soccer team secured a goal in the 74
th-minute to defeat the Fort Lewis Skyhawks, and extend their win streak to four.
Lexi Newton was behind the team's lone goal,
Lila Dere in on the help. The goal was Newton's second of the season, her first game winner of the fall campaign.
The Skyhawks outshot the Mavs by a 10-8 margin, and 5-3 in shots on goal. Fort Lewis put two more shots together in the first period,
Chloe Dody making both saves to preserve the scoreless game. The latter period, had both teams tally six shots, CMU coming away with the decisive score.
Leading up to the goal, the Mavericks held possession not allowing the ball past the midfield line even in FLC's best effort to clear the ball. With the ball towards the back line, Dere forced pressure on the defender eventually coming away with the steal and the pass over to Newton who rocketed one into the upper left corner to breakthrough.
Dody grabbed five saves throughout the afternoon on the way to her second shutout.
The Mavs will treck back to Grand Junction and prepare to face neighbors Western Colorado at Maverick Field on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
