BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team closed out their opening weekend at the Tornado Duals hosted by King University on Sunday (Jan. 17). The Tornado Duals featured the nation's top schools that included #2 McKendree, #3 Emmanuel, #4 King, and #7 Colorado Mesa. Check out the brief recaps of each dual:
#2 McKendree 36, #7 Colorado Mesa 10
In the first matchup of the day, second-ranked McKendree showed their clout with a 36-10 win over No. 7 Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks were only able to garner two wins in the nine contested bouts of the matchup.
No. 3
Marissa Gallegos earned one of the two wins as she pinned No. 7 Payton Stroud in 1:39 at 123 pounds. Gallegos fell behind early but hit a throw that put Stroud to her back, earning the redshirt sophomore the pin.
Freshman
Tristan Kelly picked up the Mavericks other win in the dual with a pin of Grace Kristoff at the 4:33 mark of the match. Kelly fell behind after getting pushed out early in the match but rebounded in the second period by earning the fall.

Colorado Mesa found tough sledding in their second dual of the day, squaring off with fourth-ranked and host King. The Mavericks were only able to win one of the contested bouts and finished with two wins in the dual in a 33-12 defeat.
At 191 pounds, freshman
Isabeau Shalack earned a pin of third-ranked (170 pounds) Nia Croasdale at the 5:47 mark of the bout. Shalack had a 3-0 lead before putting Croasdale on her back for the win.
Freshman
Tristan Kelly earned a forfeit at 170 pounds for the only other win for the Mavericks.

Marissa Gallegos finished her day at 2-1 after earning a 10-0 technical fall over Alexandra Herle in the first round for one of the three Maverick wins.
Junior
Kaylee Lacy may have had the most improbable win of the trio. Lacy trailed No. 7 ranked (136) Julia Padilla late in the match when she threw a headlock and pinned Padilla with just 12 seconds left in the bout.
The final Maverick win came from
Tristan Kelly at 170 pounds after a 10-0 technical fall win over Heaven Byrd.
