Mavericks Advance to RMAC Tournament Championship

Mavericks set to play Westminster in RMAC Tournament Championship Saturday at 6 pm.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – For the second consecutive season the Maverick women's basketball team advanced to the championship game of the RMAC Tournament after a 59-47 win over fourth seeded Colorado School of Mines Friday night in Brownson Arena.

The Mavericks have now knocked Colorado School of Mines out of the RMAC Tournament in three of the past four seasons and will play third seeded Westminster tomorrow night at 6 pm in the final game for the second consecutive year.

Tomorrow night the Mavericks will be seeking their fourth tournament championship under the direction of head coach Taylor Wagner

Three players for the Mavericks reached double figures tonight as Daniella Turner recorded a game high 17 points. Sophie Anderson recorded a career high 15 points and Kylyn Rigsby, who sat majority of the first half due to foul trouble, recorded 12 points.

The Mavericks shots 36.4 percent from the field, 29.2 percent from the three-point line, and 85.7 percent from the free throw line while limiting the Orediggers to 25.0 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from the three-point line, and 78.6 percent from the free throw line.

Defensive Player of the Year, Sydni Brandon recorded a game high 10 rebounds, nine of which were recorded on the defensive end. She also dished out six assists.

The Mavericks held the RMAC's leading scorer and Player of the Year to just eight points. Denali Pinto, who was averaging over 20 points coming into tonight's game finished with eight points. Sammy Van Sickle led the Orediggers with 13 points (2-of-8) and was seven of eight from the free throw line.

Colorado Mesa's bench outscored the Orediggers 17-0.

The Orediggers recorded the first points of the game before Anderson and Kelsey Siemons recorded back-to-back field goals to take a 5-2 lead. Pinto tied the game with a three-pointer, 5-5, at the first media timeout. From then the Orediggers outscored the Mavs 7-2 and forced the Mavs into a timeout. Out of the timeout Turner recorded two consecutive jumpers to get the Mavericks within two points before Van Sickle drained a three-pointer to take a 16-11 Oredigger lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Mavericks went on to outscore the Orediggers 15-7 in the second quarter. Colorado School of Mines suffered six turnovers during that time which led to six points for the Mavericks. The Mavs took their first lead of the game since the first quarter with 6:17 left to play, 21-19. Turner recorded seven points to give the Mavericks that lead. The Orediggers got within one point on two different occasions, but the Mavericks held a 26-23 lead at the break.

The Mavericks third quarter ultimately won the game for them as they went on to outscore the Orediggers 23-6. Anderson and Rigsby combined for 20 of the Mavs' 23 third quarter points. The Mavs had their best scoring run of the game to start the quarter which included 11 points to reach a 37-24 lead with 4:49 remaining. The Mavericks continuted to score and Anderson hit a three-pointer with 1:16 left to play in the third that gave the Mavericks their largest lead of the game, 49-29.

Colorado School of Mines went on to outscore the Mavericks 18-10 in the final quarter, but their deficit was too large to overcome.
