Back-to-back RMAC Tournament Champions

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The top seeded Colorado Mesa women's basketball team (26-5) won their second consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Championship against third seeded Westminster College (25-7) 60-48 Saturday night inside Brownson Arena. This is now back-to-back years the Mavericks have defeated the Griffins in the final game of the RMAC Tournament.

Junior Kylyn Rigsby was tabbed as the Tournament MVP after averaging 20.7 points per game throughout the tournament. In tonight's win she recorded a game high 24 points and hit five three-pointers. Sophie Anderson and Daniella Turner earned All-Tournament and Sydni Brandon earned it for the second consecutive year along with Rigsby.

This win marks the fourth RMAC Tournament Championship for head coach Taylor Wagner and fifth in program history. Wagner is now 14-4 when coaching in RMAC Tournament games.

With this win the Mavericks have punched their ticket to the South Central Regional Tournament for the sixth time in program history. Seeding will be announced tomorrow night at the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Selection Show at 8 pm.

In tonight's game the Mavericks shot 34.5 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from the three-point line, and 83.3 percent from the free-throw line. The Mavericks bench outscored the Griffins 25-5 and record 10 more points off of turnovers.

Rigsby recorded all of the Mavericks' 13 points in the first quarter, but Mavs found themselves down one at the end of the first quarter, 14-13. Westminster scored seven points in the first minute of the second quarter to hold a 19-13 lead. The Mavs answered with eight consecutive points to tie the game 21-21 with 4:32 remaining in the half. In that run Sierra McNicol recorded six points. The two teams exchanged baskets until Tori Catlett's jumper gave the Mavericks a 26-25 lead that they continued to extend into the locker room holding a 32-25 lead at the half.

Westminster went on to outscore the Mavericks 16-6 in the third quarter and take a 41-38 lead at the end of the third. The Mavericks answered by outscoring the Griffins 22-7 in the fourth quarter and reached their largest lead of the game with one-minute remaining. Eight of those 22 fourth quarter points came from the free throw line.

Up Next

The Mavericks will await their seeding in the South Central Regional Tournament which will be announced tomorrow night at 8 pm during the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Selection Show. The Mavericks were tabbed fourth in the most recent regional ranking released by the NCAA.
