Mavs fall to regionally-ranked foes

WICHITA FALLS, Texas— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team was downed 7-0 by two of the top three ranked teams in the NCAA Division II South Central Region on Friday.  The sixth-ranked Mavs fell to 6-5 on the year as they dropped matches to the second-ranked and host MSU-Texas Mustangs (6-7) and then the third-ranked Cameron University Aggies (4-3).
 
The Mavs failed to win a match in either affair although they did take a singles match to three sets in both while taking a doubles match to a tiebreaker in each.

The Mustangs had three regionally-ranked and two nationally-ranked singles player in their lineup.
 
CMU's Tyler Landen took his No. 3 singles match to three sets against Alberto Diaz, ranked 19th in the region.  Landen won the first set 6-3, but dropped the second 6-2 before losing a 10-7 tie-breaker.
 
In doubles, Christian Albrechtsen and Alain De La Bastide fared the best for the Mavs.  They fell 7-1 in the No. 1 doubles tie-breaker to Alex Martinez Roca and Alexandre Crepy.

The Aggies also had three regionally-ranked singles players, including fourth-ranked Bruno Vietri, ranked 28th nationally.
 
In singles, the Mavs' best effort came from Mitchell Steadman at No. 6.  He won the first set over Gabe Wilbourn, 7-5 before doing down 6-2 in the second and 10-7 in the tie-breaker.
 
In doubles, Steadman and Thiago Nejm, dropped a No. 3 heartbreaker to Maycon Dias and Wilbourn, falling 7-5 in the tiebreaker.

The Mavericks will have challenge on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CST (8 a.m. Mountain) when they take on the nation's 13th-ranked Southwest Baptist University Bearcats.
