GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Behind a game high four goals from Kenzie Blackwell and Lauren Wick, the Colorado Mesa Mavericks (1-2) won their first game of the season against Northern Michigan (2-3) Wednesday night at Walker Field.
The Mavericks started the game out strong recording 12 first half goals and limiting the Panthers to just two. The second half was a more even battle, but the Mavs managed to outscore Northern Michigan 6-5.
Junior Blackwell tied her career high in goals (4) and assists (5) to reach a game high nine points. She was a perfect 4-for-4 on free position shots and picked up two ground balls.
Freshman midfielder Lauren Wick had her best game recording a career high four goals and one assists. She finished with a career high five draw controls and tied freshman Regan Wentz who also recorded a career high five draw controls
Three other Mavericks finished with multiple goals including Wentz (3), Ashton Whittle (3), and Melanie Evans (2).
Nici Boutwell and Xcaret Salvador each finished with one goal against the Panthers.
The Mavericks finished the game 8-of-9 on free position shots with goals coming from Whittle, Evans, Boutwell, and Salvador. The Panthers were just 3-of-9 on free position shots due to Lula Mitchell who recorded ten saves.
The Mavericks got out to a 5-0 lead before the Panthers put themselves on the board and went on to outscore the Panthers 7-1 the remainder of the first half. All four of Blackwell's goals game in the opening half and Wentz recorded a man up goal.
The Panthers recorded two quick goals in the opening minutes of the second half which the Mavericks matched to hold a 15-6 lead with 20 minutes left to play. Northern Michigan recorded one more goal before the Mavericks finished the game scoring three consecutive goals, two of which were recorded by Whittle.
