GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's lacrosse team came from 12-10 down in the final two minutes of regulation before
Nici Boutwell scored the game winner just one minute and 21 seconds into overtime as the Mavericks outlasted visiting Rockhurst University, 13-12 in an NCAA Division II Midwest Region contest on Wednesday evening at Walker Field.
The Mavericks improved to 2-2 win the win while the Hawks, who had themselves rallied from 8-4 down to tie the game at eight before going up 11-9 and 12-10, fell to 4-4 on the campaign.
The teams were whistled for 68 combined fouls in the nearly 2 ½-hour contest.
The Mavericks are now 9-0 all-time against their former Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rivals.
Kenzie Blackwell scored four goals on 12 shots to lead the Mavericks and tallied the equalizer with 58.3 seconds left in regulation. She also scored a key marker with 3:32 left to temporarily break a 7-1 Hawk run, which had given the visitors their first 2-goal lead at 10-8.
Boutwell also added a hat-trick and finished with five draw controls.
Lauren Wick also had five draw controls and had a hand in four goals, scoring two while assisting on two others.
Lula Mitchell tallied 11 saves for the Mavericks in net.
Logan Derosia and Audrey Ford led the Hawks with three goals each while Hannah Miller recorded five points with a goal and four helpers.
The Mavericks led 6-4 at the half of what was defensive game. Boutwell then scored twice in the opening two minutes of the second half to put the Mavericks up 8-4 with 28:04 left.
After more than seven minutes of scoreless lacrosse, DeRosia scored her 27
th goal of the season on a Miller assist triggering a 4-0 Hawk run as the Mavericks went nearly 20 minutes without a goal.
Blackwell broke the streak with 8:43 left as the Mavericks went back up, 9-8.
However, the Hawks would respond with three goals of their own from Ford on a free position shot and tallies from Addison Bradley and Helen Krause, both of which were assisted by Miller, to take an 11-9 lead.
After Blackwell and Miller traded goals, the Hawks led 12-10 as the clock ticked under two minutes.
Freshman
Melanie Evans then dodged her way to a goal with 1:46 left before the Mavericks won the ensuing draw, which led ty Blackwell's equalizer.
CMU again won the draw and had a chance to win it in regulation but saw their shot go wide as time expired.
Wick then won the draw at the begging of overtime, which led to Boutwell's game-winner, assisted by Evans, on the first shot of the extra period.
The Mavericks finished with a 32-28 edge in ground balls and a 37-31 advantage in shots throughout the game. The Hawks had a 15-13 edge in draw controls.
Mitchell had seven ground balls to pace the Mavs while Abigail WItmer added six.
Going 2-0 at home against regional foes over the last eight days, the Mavericks are now facing a 4-game stretch on the road, starting Tuesday at Lewis in Romeoville, Illinois.
