LEBANON, Ill.— Colorado Mesa University freshman
Dalia Garibay claimed an 8-6 win over top-ranked Emma Bruntil in the 136-pound match, the unquestioned Maverick highlight in what was a 31-12 women's wrestling dual set-back to the nation's top-ranked McKendree University Bearcats on Friday night here at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center.
The fourth-ranked Mavericks also picked wins from
Anja Tschohl and
Marissa Gallegos at 116 and 123 pounds, respectively, but gave up three forfeits and two pins as they dropped to 7-4 on the season.
McKendree, wrestling at home for the first time, improved to 4-0 in duals.
Garibay, ranked fourth nationally, avenged a 10-0 loss to Bruntil at last month's National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals and improved to 12-5 on the season as her win pulled the Mavericks to within 13-12 after McKendree had built a 9-0 lead with a 10-0 win No. 2 Pauline Granados at 101 pounds and a 109-forfeit.
Tschohl, ranked fifth at 116, then needed just 53 seconds to post a technical wall win over Katherine Sumner before CMU's Gallegos, ranked fourth, downed No. 7 Payton Stroud by technical fall at 123 pounds.
The Bearcats would answer back at 130 pounds as third-ranked Alexia Ward claimed a 6-1 decision over CMU All-American and fifth-ranked
Sierra Brown Ton, which made the dual score 12-9.
Garibay's win then cut the gap to one before McKendree's heavy hitters, who are all ranked in the top three of their respective weight classes, each won in the final four matches of the dual.
Alara Boyd, ranked third at 143 pounds started the run with an 8-0 decision over CMU's fifth-ranked
Alma Mendoza. No. 2 Alexandria Glaude then won by technical fall over
Kira Gilliland at 155 pounds before second-ranked Andrea Sennett and Sydnee Kimber each received forfeits at 170 and 191 pounds to complete the score.
The Mavericks will remain in the Land of Lincoln on Saturday as they will compete in the Bearcat Open, which will bring together each of the top of the five and seven of the top eight teams in the most recent NWCA NCAA Women's Tournament Teams Rankings.
