Balanced Scoring Gives Mavs Win Over Westminster

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Five different Mavericks scored in double-figures tonight as Colorado Mesa Men's Basketball (14-8, 10-6 RMAC) defeated Westminster (14-8, 9-7 RMAC), 75-61 Friday night inside Brownson Arena.

Tommy Nuno and Georgie Dancer led the way with 15 points each while Nuno added 10 rebounds to his night marking the fourth double-double of the career and third this season. Jared Small recorded 12 points with half of them coming from the free-throw line while Michael Skinner recorded 10 points, six rebounds, and five assists.

The Mavericks' bench outscored the Griffins' bench 15-5 thanks to Jess Spivey who was responsible for 11 of the 15 coming off the bench in tonight's win. Spivey was 3-of-4 from downtown tonight knocking down a season high three three-pointers.

The Mavericks out worked the Griffins in every category tonight shooting 54.3 percent (25-of-46) from the field, 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from the three-point line, and 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the free-throw line.  

The Griffins shot 45.8 percent (22-of-48) from the field, 39.1 percent (9-of-23) from the three-point line, and 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from the free throw line.

The Mavericks recorded ten steals tonight and maintained a lead throughout the entire game. They extended their lead by as much as 13 points with under five minutes remaining in the first half and held a 37-26 lead by halftime.

Small opened up the second half with a three ball as the Mavericks hit seven of their nine three-pointers in the second half. The Griffins outscored the Mavs 9-2 following Small's three-pointer to get within seven points, 42-35 with 13:45 remaining.

The Mavericks went on to outscore the Griffins 14-4 to extend their lead, 57-41, with under ten minutes to play. The Griffins inched their way back into the game and got within seven points before Dancer, Small, and Nuno all knocked down three-pointers with under three minutes to extend the lead and secure the win.  

The Mavericks reached their largest lead of the game at 17 points just before the Griffins hit a three pointer in their final possession to settle the score, 75-61.

Up Next

The Mavericks will host Dixie State tomorrow night at 7:30 pm in Brownson Arena and strive to keep their home record undefeated.
