FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Junior
Spencer Bramwell's two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning propelled No.3 Colorado Mesa to an 8-7 opening day win over No. 16 Nova Southeastern at NSU Baseball Complex in non-conference action.
Bramwell drilled an 0-0 pitch from Shark reliever Lucas Reid over the fence in left center field for a two-run home run, giving the Mavericks an 8-6 lead in the game. Freshman
Harrison Rodgers scored on the homer and was on to run for designated hitter
Haydn McGeary who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.
The junior finished 2-for-3 and had a good view of the other story of the game, catching for reliever
Josh Danyliw.
Danyliw earned his first collegiate win on the mound, pitching the final five innings of the game in relief of starter
Andrew Morris. Danyliw allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits, walked one and struck out five. The sophomore faced traffic in four of his five innings of work but escaped each with minimal damage.
The Mavericks only other run of the game came in the third inning on a two-RBI single by
Jordan Stubbings that gave Colorado Mesa a short lived 2-1 lead. Nove would take a 4-2 lead in the bottom half of the inning on a three-run home run by Adan Fernandez.
Nova Southeastern led 6-3 when Colorado Mesa would make their run finishing with five unanswered runs until the ninth inning.
Caleb Farmer and
Haydn McGeary each had RBI singles in the seventh inning while
Blaine Demello's bases loaded hit-by-pitch in the eighth tied the game at 6-6.
The Sharks scored one run in the ninth inning and had the tying run on second base when the game ended. Danyliw induced a Joey Raffaele fly out to deep center field to end the game.
The win marks the seventh straight season opening win for the Mavericks. The last loss came in 2013 when they fell 6-2 to No. 23 UC San Diego in California.
Colorado Mesa and Nova Southeastern will continue the series tomorrow at 4pm (mountain).
