Big Innings Costly for Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 3 Colorado Mesa baseball team led 7-0 but allowed a pair of big innings late to Minot State and fell 11-10 in extra innings on Friday afternoon at Suplizio Field in the opener of the final non-conference series of the season.
 
The Mavericks jumped out to a 3-0 lead after RBI hits by Spencer Bramwell and Jordan Stubbings followed by a four run inning in the third. Bramwell and Stubbings hit back-to-back doubles followed by an RBI triple by Chase Hamilton.
 
Minot State came roaring back scoring five in the in the fourth to make it 7-5 but Colorado Mesa got two back in the bottom half of the inning to make it 9-6.
 
The Beavers tied the game up at 9-9 in the top of the seventh inning after scoring three runs in the inning and took the lead for the first time in the top of the eighth inning after a leadoff triple followed by a balk that forced in the go-ahead run.
 
Colorado Mesa evened it back up in the bottom of the ninth on a RBI double by Caleb Farmer, sending the game to extra innings.
 
Minot State's Drew Behling hit the go-ahead solo home run in the tenth inning to give the Beavers the win.
 
Haydn McGeary finished the game with four hits while Bramwell and Stubbings each had three hits in the game.
 
The pitching staff combined to strikeout 15 batters but had seven costly walks in the game as three of those walks came around to score.
 
The Mavericks and Beavers will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at Noon from Suplizio Field.
