GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 3 Colorado Mesa baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with the Minot State Beavers at Suplizio Field.
In the first game, Colorado Mesa led 4-2 after five innings but allowed 11 runs in the final four innings to fall 13-10 to the Beavers.
Matt Turner had his breakout game after going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and four runs driven in. He hit his first two home runs of the season and added a double.
Tanner Garner,
Matt Cassin, and
Chase Hamilton all had multi-hit games while
Caleb Farmer hit his second home run of the year.
It was the first time since 2017 that the Mavericks lost three in a row at home.
In the night cap, the Mavericks once again fell behind 4-0 after four and a half innings but this time they had enough to complete the comeback by scoring 10 runs between the fourth and sixth innings for a 10-6 win over the Beavers.
The fourth started out with a RBI triple by
Chase Hamilton followed by a RBI single by Matt Turner that found its way up the middle and into center field.
Caleb Farmer capped the inning with a solo home run, his third of the season that cut the Beaver lead to 4-3 after four.
Tanner Garner tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to right center, his second of the season.
Colorado Mesa broke it open in the sixth inning with a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by
Caleb Farmer that allowed Matt Turner to score and Farmer to make it all the way around to third base on the play.
Blaine Demello singled to right field to score Farmer just a batter later.
Later in the inning,
Haydn McGeary stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered his eighth home run this season. This one for a grand slam that made it 10-4 for the Mavericks.
Minot State would tally a pair of runs in the seventh inning but wouldn't get any closer.
Garrett Tisdall picked up the win in relief after a terrific outing by
Jared Ure. Tisdall (1-1) allowed two runs (zero earned) on one hit, walked two and struck out four in the outing. Ure went five and a third allowing four runs on six hits, walked two and struck out six but didn't factor into the decision.
Colorado Mesa and Minot State will close out the series with a single nine-inning game tomorrow afternoon at Suplizio Field. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
