ST. GEORGE, Utah— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks claimed their second straight win as they cruised to 4-0 neutral-court women's tennis win over NCAA Division II South Central Regional foe Western New Mexico University on Sunday here at Tonaquint Park.
The match, delayed by wet conditions in the morning, was played to clinch as the Mavericks won both completed doubles matches and all three of the completed singles affairs without dropping a single set to improve to 7-5 in dual meets this season. WNMU fell to 4-3 on the campaign.
The Maverick No. 2 and 3 doubles duos of
Rebecca Osterberg and
Maike Waldburger and
Carolena Campos and
Halle Romero each won their matches 6-3 as the Mavericks claimed the early momentum.
Kristen Kirby, Osterberg and Campos then claimed straight set singles wins to complete the win.
Kirby was the first to win as she took down Julia Tozzi, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1. Osterberg then defeated Nicold Gonzalez, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 before Campos secured the win with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Julia Terrazas in the fourth flight.
The other three singles matches and the No. 1 doubles match went unfinished.
The Mavericks have now won three out of the last four and four out of the last six matches against the Mustangs dating back to 2016.
CMU will be off next weekend before playing three nationally-ranked opponents in as many days at the Midwestern State Duals in Wichita Falls, Texas from Mar. 5-7.
