No. 19 Mavs Stunned in Unusual Home Loss

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa Women's Basketball team (21-4, 17-2) suffered their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season home loss since 2018 on Saturday night. This 77-64 loss came at the hands of Regis University who improved to 11-14 overall and 9-10 in conference.

Regis snapped a 24 regular season home game win streak for the Mavericks, who still hold a first-place position in the RMAC standings.

After the game the Mavericks celebrated the team's three seniors which included Sydni Brandon, Tori Catlett, and Sariah Wi Neera.

Brandon finished the game with nine points, six assists, and a team high seven rebounds. Catlett was a perfect 3-of-3 from the field.

Regis drained 11 three-pointers and was led by Whitney Jacobs who recorded a game high 24 points and went 5-of-7 from three-point range while shooting 9-of-13 overall. Three other Rangers scored in double figures.

The Rangers shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the field, 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from the three-point line, and 63.6 percent (14-of-22) from the free throw line.

The Mavericks were limited to 36.4 percent (24-of-66) from the field, 22.6 percent (7-of-31) from beyond, and 75.0 percent (9-of-12) from the free-throw line.

This 13-point loss was the worst home loss for head coach Taylor Wagner in his tenure who owns a 189-45 overall record and a 146-33 RMAC record.

The Mavericks reached their largest lead of the game with 1:41 remaining in the first quarter as they led 19-6 before the Rangers scored the final six points of the quarter to get within six points, 19-3, at the end of the opening quarter.

The Mavericks were outscored 21-13 in the second quarter as Regis took a two-point lead into the locker room after tying the game twice. Regis recorded six three-pointers in the third quarter to outscore the Mavericks 28-11 and hold a 62-43 lead entering the final frame. The Mavericks were down by as much as 21 points just before the end of the third.

Despite outscoring the Ranger 21-15 in the final quarter the Mavericks ultimately fell, 77-64.

Up Next

The Mavericks will hit the road for their final three regular season game starting with Fort Lewis on Feb 21 and Adams State on Feb 22. The regular season will end on Feb 28 against Western in Gunnison, Colo.

The Mavericks have clinched a first round home game in the 2020 RMAC Tournament which will be held on March 3.
