No. 24 Mavs Defeat Fort Lewis 63-60 to Clinch Share of RMAC Championship

DURANGO, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa Maverick women's basketball team (22-4, 18-2 RMAC) clinched a share of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Regular Season title in tonight's 63-60 win over Fort Lewis (15-10, 10-9 RMAC) inside Whalen Gymnasium.

Colorado Mesa handed the Skyhawks just their second home loss of the season and first of conference games. 

Tonight's win secured at least a second seed in the RMAC Tournament and a win tomorrow against Adams State would secure outright ownership of the 2019-2020 RMAC Regular Season Championship.

The Mavericks were led by Kelsey Siemons who recorded 16 points. The Tucson, Ariz. native knocked down all four of the team's three pointers, including two in the final quarter, and grabbed down five rebounds while recording two blocks.

Daniella Turner recorded 15 points in tonight's win and reached double figures for the eighteenth time this season and seventh consecutive game.

The Mavericks shot 35.8 percent (24-of-67) from the field, 13.8 percent (4-of-29) from the three-point line, and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the free throw line.

Sydni Brandon finished with five rebounds, four assists, five steals, and seven points while junior Kylyn Rigsby tied a career high seven assists to go along with ten points. Sierra McNicol grabbed down a team high seven rebounds.

The Skyhawks shot 39.7 percent (25-of-38) from the field, 22.2 percent (4-fo-18) from beyond, and 58.8 percent (10-0f-17) from the free throw line.

The Mavericks outscored the Skyhawks 16-12 in the first quarter but were outscored in the following two qauters to reach a 39-39 game entering the final quarter. The Skyhawks took a four-point lead, 44-40, after knocking down a three-pointer with 8:42 remaining in the game. Rigsby scored a jumper to get within two before the Skyhawks leading scoring, Jordan Vasquez, recorded free throws to again take a four-point lead with 7:49 remaining.

Vasquez finished with a double-double posting 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Turner scored four of the next six Maverick points to tie the game 48-48 with 6:16 remaining. She recorded ten points in the final eight minutes to help secure the win and recorded three consecutive field goals to take a 52-49 lead that was quickly tied by a Skyhawk three-pointer.

Siemons answered with a three-pointer that stuck a 11-8 run in the final 4:22 to defeat the Skyhawks. Siemons final three ball of the game came at the 55 second mark to take a one point lead, 62-60, which was followed by a free throw from Turner to hold off the Skyhawks 63-60.

Tomorrow's Game

The Mavericks will travel to Alamosa, Colo. for a game against the Adams State Grizzlies tomorrow at 5:30 pm inside Plachy Hall.
