GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 24 Colorado Mesa women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season after a complete effort win over MSU Denver 91-57 on Saturday evening in Brownson Arena. It was the second straight game that fans were not allowed in the venue due to COVID precautions.
The Mavericks shot 50 percent from the field and 42.3 percent from beyond the arc, making 11 total three-pointers. They scored 22 points on fast breaks and forced the Roadrunners into 18 turnovers that led to 29 points.
Colorado Mesa raced out to a 19-15 lead after the first and grew the lead to 48-32 at halftime. In the second half, the Mavericks led by as many as 35 points with 1:19 to play in the third quarter after a pair of made free-throws by
Natalie Bartle.
MSU Denver never had the lead in the game.
Daniella Turner tied a career-high with 29 points to lead all scorers. She was 12-of-19 shooting from the field and 2-for-4 from the three-point line and filled the stat sheet as she added eight rebounds, six assists, and five steals. She also had 29 last year against Colorado School of Mines.
Four others finished in double figures.
Kylyn Rigsby had 16 points, Bartle had 14,
Sierra McNicol finished with 12 and
Kelsey Siemons chipped in 10.
Three different Mavericks shared the rebounding lead for the evening with McNicol, Turner, and
Sophie Anderson each finishing with eight rebounds.
MSU Denver's Allie Navarette led the Roadrunners with 16 points.
Colorado Mesa will head out on their first roadtrip of the season when they travel to take on Black Hills State and Chadron State on Friday and Saturday.
