RAPID CITY, S.D. – Colorado Mesa snapped a three-game winning streak on Friday night after an 87-78 setback to the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers. The loss by the Mavericks was the first-ever to South Dakota Mines in six chances.
Colorado Mesa (8-4, 4-2 RMAC) trailed by as many as 19 points at 54-35 with 15:52 left in the game. But, the Mavericks came storming back and had the lead cut to one at 66-65 with 4:05 to play after a pair of free-throws by
Michael Skinner.
The Mavericks couldn't get any closer as South Dakota Mines extended the lead back out in the waning minutes of the game.
Colorado Mesa shot just 47.5 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from beyond the three-point arc for the game.
Senior
Tommy Nuno paced the Mavericks with a team-high 18 points and seven rebounds.
Michael Skinner had 15 points while
Georgie Dancer had 13 to round out the Mavericks in double figures.
The Hardrockers had six of their eight players that saw action score in double figures led by the game-high 21 points of Mitchell Sueker.
The Mavericks will head down the road to take on Black Hills State on Saturday at 6pm in the Young Center. The Yellow Jackets took on Western Colorado on Friday evening and were locked in a tight game late.
