GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Behind a game high 19 points from Daniella Turner the Colorado Mesa Mavericks defeated CSU-Pueblo 59-41 Saturday night inside Brownson Arena to improve to 13-2 overall and 9-0 in conference.
Eight different Mavericks scored in tonight's victory as the team shot 42.9 percent from the field, 20.0 percent from the three-point line, and 63.6 percent from the free-throw line. The Maverick defense forced the ThunderWolves into 15 turnovers which was led by Sydni Brandon who recorded five steals to go along with five assists and eight points.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the first media timeout thanks to Sophie Anderson and Sierra McNicol. The lead was quickly answered by the ThunderWolves who scored seven consecutive baskets to take a 7-5 lead with 5:36 to play in quarter one. The Mavericks never regained a lead till Turner recorded a jump shot with 3:56 remaining that struck an 8-6 run in favor of the Mavs to hold a two points advantage after the first quarter, 18-16. From that points on the Mavericks never gave up a lead.
The Mavericks outscored the ThunderWolves, 17-4 in the second quarter and forced CSUP into five turnovers to extend their lead, 35-20, at the half. A low scoring third quarter for both teams kept the Mavericks in the lead, 44-29 entering the final stretch of the game.
The ThunderWolves outscored the Mavs 7-3 to being the fourth quarter that included a steal and fast break layup. This forced CMU to call a timeout with 7:12 remaining in the game. Out of the timeout Turner missed her first attempt, but scored her next four field goals to help the Mavericks end the game on a 12-5 run that was closed out by a three-pointer from Kylyn Rigsby who ended the night with ten points, five rebounds, and three assists.
