GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa Mavericks knocked down 12 three-pointers and shot a season best 50 percent from three-point land to defeat Adams State 67-42 Friday night inside Brownson Arena. The Mavericks improved to 10-0 in conference and 14-2 overall to extend their win streak to 12 games.
Kelsey Siemons and Kylyn Rigsby led the Mavs with 16 points each and combined for seven of the Mavs' 12 three-pointers. Siemons was perfect from the field shooting 6-of-6 and draining four treys. She added two blocked shots and two rebounds to her night.
The Mavericks shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the field and 53.8 percent from the free-throw line (7-of-13) while limiting Adams State to 32.6 percent (15-of-46) from the field, 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from the three-point line, and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the free throw line.
The Mavs jumped out to a 9-0 lead by the media timeout of the first quarter and did not give up a field goal till 3:13 remaining after Makaela Ewing recorded a three-pointer that struck a 7-0 run to close in on the Mavericks lead, 11-8, with 2:10 left to play. The Mavericks answered the run with a 10-2 run themselves that lasted into the second quarter giving the Mavs a 21-10 lead. In that run Rigsby recorded six points.
The Grizzlies scored back-to-back three-pointers to end the run and cut their deficit to five points with 8:14 to play in the second quarter. Both teams exchanged baskets before the Mavericks closed the game on an 8-0 run that included back-to-back threes and a pair of free throws from Sydni Brandon. The Mavericks held a 13 points advantage at the break, 35-22.
Rigsby knocked down a three-pointer to begin the third quarter which was followed by baskets from Sierra McNicol and Siemons to extend the Mavs lead, 42-24. Following this the Grizzlies outscored the Mavs 9-4 to cut their deficit to 15 at the first media timeout of the third quarter. Out of the media timeout the Mavericks recorded five straight points due to a three-pointer from Daniella Turner along with an and-one opportunity from Savannah Domgaard who missed her free throw. Domgaard finished the game with a career high seven points. The Grizzlies got to the free-throw with 6 seconds remaining in the quarter and went one-of-two. By the end of the third the Mavs led 51-32.
The Grizzlies recorded the first bucket of the fourth quarter, before Rigsby and Domgaard scored consecutive baskets. ASU answered with a free throw and a field goal before a Siemons three ball struck an 8-3 run that led the Mavs to their largest lead of the game, 67-42 with 2:17 left to play where the score would stay till the final buzzer.
Tomorrow Night
The Mavericks will host Fort Lewis College tomorrow night at 5:30 pm inside Brownson Arena. The Skyhawks fell to Western Colorado 72-84 Friday night in Gunnison, Colo. and enter tomorrow's game with a 11-4 overall record and a 7-3 conference record.
