No. 17 Mavs Win 4-1 over Newman

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Four different Mavericks scored in Sunday's nonconference matchup against Newman University, which gave the Mavericks their first win of the 2019 season. The Mavericks are now 1-1-0 on the short season.

Senior goalkeeper Brendan Brown was awarded the win in the net and recorded two saves on the day.

Palm Beach Atlantic transfer James Scasserra scored the first goal of the season for the Mavericks in the 10th minute to put the Mavs on the board early. The Jets answered to tie the game in the 33rd minute, but Ethan Anderson put the Mavericks up 2-1 with just three minutes remaining in the half.

Anderson's goal was assisted by Aaron Martinez who also scored the Mavs' third goal of the game in the 51st minute after he stole the ball from the Jets and scored on the opposing goalkeeper in a one-on-one opportunity.

The Mavericks sealed the deal in the 86th minute after Alec Fronapfel scored the final goal of the game. Peter Vandam was awarded the assist after giving Fronapfel a quick pass off his chest.

The Mavericks will take their season on the road for the first time next Saturday. They will travel to Nampa, Idaho and play Northwest Nazarene at 11 am.
