Camille Smith and
Kasie Gilfert combined for 35 kills and 13 blocks while setter
Ara Norwood recorded a double-double with 29 assists and 10 digs as the Colorado Mesa University volleyball team bounced back from an earlier Saturday loss to national eighth-ranked Northern State to defeat Dallas Baptist University in four sets. The 25-22, 25-14, 22-25, 25-15 victory over the Patriots allowed the Mavericks to wrap up the Oredigger Volleyball Classic, played here at the Colorado School of Mines' Lockridge Arena with a 3-1 weekend record.
DBU fell to 1-3.
Smith finished the match with 18 kills and seven blocks while Gilfert had 17 kills and six blocks while hitting .467.
Senior outside hitter
Katie Scherr also had a strong match with 13 kills as the Mavericks recorded 61 as a team. They also had a season-high 13 team blocks along with five service aces, while committing just one service error.
The Mavericks trailed 21-18 in the first set but won seven of the final eight points to take the opening frame and then rode that momentum to a comfortable 11-point second set win.
They were not able to complete a similar comeback in the third set but got to an 8-0 lead in the fourth with Norwood behind the service line while closing out the match with another double-figure set win.
Throughout the weekend tournament, which also included Friday wins over Fresno Pacific and Lubbock Christian, the Mavericks were strong in the middle.
Gilfert, the national statistical champion in 2018 for attack percentage, led the 8-team tournament with a .442 effort. She also had a tournament-high 15 blocks was also second in kills with 56 and total points (65). Smith led the latter two categories recording 58 kills and 67 points while hitting .378, the fourth best mark of the weekend.
Earlier in the afternoon against Northern State, which went 4-0 on the weekend, Smith and Gilfert had 11 kills apiece.
However, the Wolves hit at a blistering .432 pace and had three players in double figures for kills en-route to a 25-19, 25-13, 25-18 win. They then took down the host Orediggers in four sets while the Mavericks were handling DBU on the other court.
The Mavericks will continue non-conference tournament play next week competing at the Drury Invitational in Springfield, Missouri starting Thursday against the host Panthers, who were ranked 18
th in the AVCA's Preseason Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll. They went 1-3 on their opening weekend.
