Mavericks Open Up RMAC with a Draw

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa Mavericks men's soccer team tied 1-1 with Fort Lewis College Friday night in the first match of the 2019 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season. Alec Fronapfel tied the game in the 83rd minute to send the Mavs into overtime, but neither team found the net in overtime which resulted in a draw

The Mavericks dominated FLC on shots taking ten more than the Skyhawk's (23-13). Despite outshooting FLC the Skyhawks and Mavericks were even with six shots on goal each. Connor Lowdermilk led the team with five shots while Matthew Rhoads and Lawan Abary tied with three each.

Brenden Brown recorded his fourth consecutive start in the net for the Mavericks and recorded a season high five saves. All five saves came during regulation as neither goalkeeper was forced to make a save in overtime.

The Skyhawks recorded a goal early in the second half during the 59th minute of the game and it wasn't until the 83rd minute that the Maverick freshmen tied the game off an assist from Ethan Anderson both of which were reserves for this match. The Mavericks attempted three more shots before the end of regulation.

The Mavericks attempted two shots in the first overtime but did not find an opportunity to take a shot in the second overtime. The Mavericks defense limited the Skyhawks to just one shot between both overtimes, which came in the first ten-minute overtime period.
