PUEBLO, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Women's Tennis team went 1-1 for the second straight day as they wrapped up the Pueblo Duals here at Pueblo City Park by crushing short-handed Fort Hays State University, 5-0 in the morning before dropping a 4-3 heartbreaker to Newman University in the afternoon.
The Saturday split left the Mavericks with a 2-3 mark on the weekend and the young season.
Sophomore
Maike Waldburger was perfect on the day while senior
Kristen Kirby also won all five of her singles matches over the weekend in the top flight.
Against Fort Hays State, the Mavericks did not drop a single set nor more than three games in any set. They also took advantage of a pair of default victories as the Tigers only had five healthy players.
In doubles, Kirby and freshman partner
Laura Alsing won 6-3 at No. 1. Waldburger and
Rebecca Osterberg, who are 7-2 overall and 4-1 this weekend, also won by the same score in the second flight.
Waldburger also won her No. 6 singles match by default before
Lauren Thomas, who did not have to play in doubles, made quick work of Kimberly Stone by a 6-1, 6-3 score at NO. 5 singles.
Kirby then clinched the team win with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Natalie Lubbers before Osterberg completed the scoring with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ellea Ediger in No. 3 singles.
Alsing and
Carolena Campos also won the first set of their No. 2 and 4 singles matches, respectively. Both of those went unfinished as FHSU did not want to risk further injury heading into their afternoon match against host CSU-Pueblo, which they won 6-1.
Against Newman, the Mavericks won the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and 3. Osterberg and Waldburger won 6-3 over Liza Gerasmiova and Mariana Gaviria while Campos and Thomas won 6-4 over Isabel Campos Bifano and Mariana D'Angelo Calvalcanti.
After dropping her No. 1 doubles match with Alsing, 6-4, Kirby then put the Mavericks up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Vlada Litvinova in singles before the Jets came roaring back to win the next three completed matches.
Waldburger would then answer back for CMU with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over Gaviria to tie the team score at 3.
However, the Jets claimed the overall victory when Campos Bifano defeated CMU's Campos in a tight No. 4 singles match, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
The Mavericks will be off next weekend before playing their only two home matches of the fall season when they face Dixie State and Colorado College on Sept. 27 (3 p.m.) and 28 (1:30 p.m.), respectively.
