PUEBLO, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Newman University in the Mavericks' final match of the weekend at the Pueblo Duals on Saturday afternoon here at Pueblo City Park.
The Mavericks were hoping for a perfect 3-0 weekend but will have to settle for a winning 2-1 mark after dropping two 3-set singles matches to the Jets, who used the top half of their lineup to get the win in what was their season opener.
The Jets took the doubles point with 6-2 and 6-4 wins in the No. 1 and 2 positions. They then extended their overall lead to 3-0 with wins at No. 1 and 5 singles.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks claimed their first win at No. 4 singles thanks to freshman
Tyler Landen, who defeated Jarrod Nowak, 6-4, 6-3. Senior
Mitchell Steadman also won for the second day in a row when his Jet opponent Marcel Miasato retired after Steadman won the first set, 7-5.
Meanwhile, CMU also got out to leads at both No. 2 and 3 singles before the Jets came from behind in both matches to help aid the overall win.
At No. 2 singles, Lauri Soome defeated CMU's
Alain De La Bastide, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-5. Teodor Antelj then defeated
Moises Cure by a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 margin at No. 3.
Christian Albrechtsen and
Thiago Nejm also won for the Mavericks. They took down Miasato and Antelj, 7-5 at No. 3 doubles. Steadman and Carlton also won an exhibition doubles match, 6-1.
The Mavericks are off next weekend but will play their lone home match of the fall on Sept. 28 at 9 a.m. against Colorado College.
