SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— The Colorado Mesa University volleyball team bounced back from a Thursday night loss to host Drury University as
Katie Scherr recorded a double-double while
Kerstin Layman recorded a career-high 27 digs in a 25-23, 25-22, 25-21 neutral-court win over Truman State University on Friday morning at the Drury Invitational.
Scherr finished the match with 15 digs and 10 kills. The Mavs also received a team-high 11 kills from
Kasie Gilfert and some strong bench play from
Ashton Reese, who finished with six kills and five blocks as they improved to 4-2.
Freshman
Haley Hahn also played and started for the first time in her collegiate career recording six kills and three blocks while starting setter
Ara Norwood had 20 assists and six digs.
Maddi Foutz was also in double figures for digs with 13.
Truman State fell to 2-3 on the season as the Mavs held them to a .138 attacking percentage.
The first set was tied eight times and featured a pair of lead changes, including a massive one as the Mavericks went on a 7-0 run to reverse a 18-15 deficit into a 4-point (22-18) lead.
The Bulldogs would battle back with a 3-0 run of their own to pull within 22-21 but the Mavericks would trade points the rest of the way to finish the set on a Gilfert kill.
The Mavericks also used another big 5-0 run to take a 12-8 lead in the second set as Hahn and Reese combined for three kills in the spurt. TSU would fight back and took a 17-16 lead.
The Bulldogs then went up 19-17 and led 22-21 before
Maranda Theleus, Gilfert and Scherr all recorded kills to give the Mavericks a set point at 24-22. Gilfert and Scherr then recorded a block to put the Mavs up two sets.
Winning the final four points of that set, the Mavericks won the first four of Set 3 and would get out to 7-2, 9-4 and 11-6 leads. However, the Bulldogs would come back with a 9-3 run of their own to take the lead, which they built to 18-15.
Theleus then triggered a 4-0 Maverick run with a kill as the teams battled to ties at 19, 20 and 21.
Gilfert and Reese would then team on back-to-back blocks as the Bulldogs committed hitting errors— two unforced— on the final four points to give the Mavericks a 5-0 run and the match.
The Mavericks will be back on the O'Reilly Event Center floor against No. 18 Northwest Missouri State at 5 p.m. CDT (4 p.m. Mountain).
