PUEBLO, Colo.— Senior
Kristen Kirby and Danish freshman
Laura Alsing each went a combined 3-1 as the Colorado Mesa University Women's Tennis team claimed its first team win of the young 2019-20 season as part of a Friday split at the Pueblo Duals, being played here at Pueblo City Park.
Kirby and Alsing clinched the doubles point and then dominated their No. 1 and 2 singles matches in CMU's 6-1 afternoon win over Texas-Permian Basin. They were also the Mavs' only two winners in a 5-2 morning setback to Nebraska-Kearney.
The Mavericks are now 1-2 on the weekend and will face two Kansas opponents in Fort Hays State and Newman on Saturday.
Nebraska-Kearney Match
The Lopers, who improved to 1-1 with the morning victory, swept the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead before Kirby and Alsing put CMU up 2-1 with their victories. Kirby defeated Zhanel Turabek, 6-3, 6-4 while Alsing won 6-2, 6-2 over Trang Tran.
However, the Lopers won the other four singles matches in straight sets to claim the team win.
Texas-Permian Basin Match
Against the Falcons (1-1), the Mavericks would claim the doubles point after
Rebecca Osterberg and
Maike Waldburger defeated Julia Ramalho and Anastasia Obreque by a 6-1 margin moments before Kirby and Alsing won their match over Melissa Ariza and Mariah Briones by the same score.
In singles play, Alsing defeated Ramalho, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 while Kirby was nearly as dominant with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ariza in the top flight.
Leading 3-0 at the time, the Mavericks then clinched the victory at No. 4 singles as
Carolena Campos defeated Monika Cantu, 6-0, 6-2. Redshirt freshman
Lauren Thomas also won by that same scoreline at No. 6 singles over Obreque while Osterberg dominated a match tie-breaker, en-route to a 6-4, 1-6, 10-1 to win at No. 3 singles.
