GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Sophomore Taylor Jones recorded the lone goal of the game to lift the Mavericks past the Lopers Friday night in a nonconference match up against Nebraska Kearney (0-1-2). Kamrie Gunderson recorded a season high four saves to give the Mavericks their first shut out of the season.
The Mavericks improved to 3-0-0 after Friday night's win and will test their undefeated record against Newman University on Sunday at 2 pm.
As a team, the Mavericks outshot the Lopers 12-9 and took twice as many corner kicks (4-1). Ryanne Parker and Zoe Peterson each took a team high three shots. Two of Parker's shots were on target while Peterson record one shot on goal.
Freshman defender Devyn Parsons recorded her first career start in tonight's match and played the entire 90 minutes along with defender Jocelyn Ceccarelli who assisted Gunderson in the backline.
The Mavericks and Lopers were each scoreless in the first half. Loper's goalkeeper Allie Prososki recorded four saves in the first half to keep the Mavs scoreless but the Mavs were quick to score in the second half after Jones recorded the only goal of the game in the 54th minute.
Jones has now recorded goals in back-to-back games.
Gunderson came up huge in the second half recording three of her four saves. In the 77th minute, the Lopers took a free shot following a yellow card, but were denied by Gunderson who out jumped everyone to save the ball from reaching the net. She recorded two more saves following this play.
Next Up
The Mavericks will play Newman University Sunday afternoon at 2 pm. Newman defeated Western Friday night 3-0 and is currently on a two game win streak.
