PUEBLO, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Maverick Women's Tennis team came up on the short end of a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to Dallas Baptist University in neutral-court and NCAA Division II South Central Regional action on Thursday afternoon here at Pueblo City Park.
The match was the first of five for the Mavericks in three days at the Pueblo Duals.
The Patriots won the doubles point taking two of the three matches and then survived a late Maverick charge to claim a tie-breaking win at No. 6 singles to claim the overall victory.
In doubles,
Rebecca Osterberg and
Maike Waldburger won their fourth straight match of the young season by a comfortable 6-1 margin at No. 2. However, the Patriots came back with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles and then a 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles to seize the 1-0 overall lead.
In singles, the Mavericks' quickly answered as
Kristen Kirby scored a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kate Daugherty in the top flight. However, Genie Hernandez and Taylor Leslie then scored straight set wins at No. 4 and No. 2 singles to give the Patriots a 3-1 overall lead.
Osterberg and Waldburger then both scored 11-9 tiebreaker wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively, to tie the match. Osterberg's 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 win was over Adriana Carpenter while Waldburger came from behind to win her match 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 over Ashton Wilfong.
However, Ira Vogelmann would win her No. 6 match over Maverick redshirt freshman
Lauren Thomas, 6-2, 4-6, 10-3 to close out DBU's win.
On Friday, the Mavericks will play Nebraska-Kearney (0-1) at 8 a.m. and Texas-Permian Basin (1-0) at 12:30 p.m.
