Maverick men win team-opener, 5-2

PUEBLO, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Men's Tennis team swept the doubles matches and rode that momentum to four singles wins en-route to a 5-2 neutral-court NCAA Division II South Central Regional win over Dallas Baptist University on Thursday afternoon here at Pueblo City Park.

The match was CMU's first team encounter of the season and the first of three in three days here at the Pueblo Duals.

Sophomore Christian Albrechtsen, senior Alain De La Bastide, freshman Tyler Landen and sophomore Steven Howe all went 2-0 on the day for CMU.

De La Bastide and Moises Cure won 6-4 at No. 1 doubles to clinch the doubles point after Albrechtsen and Thiago Nejm won a 6-1 match at No. 3.  Landen and Howe also won 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.

In singles, Albrechtsen claimed the Mavs' first win, taking down Grant McKenzie, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1.  Landen was even more dominant in his No. 4 win over Riley Smith, winning it 6-1, 6-1.

De La Bastide then clinched the team win with a tight 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 win at No. 2 over Brian Nguyen.

Howe was also victorious over Gabe Garrido at No. 5 singles.  He won by a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 margin.

After winning the consolation doubles title at last weekend's MSU Denver Invitational, Maverick seniors Mitchell Steadman and Cody Carlton also claimed a 6-2 exhibition doubles win.  They also both won exhibition singles matches.

The Mavericks continue their weekend on Friday morning facing Texas-Permian Basin at 8 o'clock.  The Falcons won their season opener over host CSU-Pueblo by a 7-0 margin.
