GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 1 Colorado Mesa baseball team used the long ball to defeat rival CSU-Pueblo 11-4 in their opening game of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament at Suplizio Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mavericks hit a season-high five home runs in the win including back-to-back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the third inning. With one out in the inning,
Caleb Farmer hit a solo home run to left, his fifth of the season.
Haydn McGeary followed him with a solo home run to left center, his ninth of his freshman season. Then,
Chase Hamilton belted his fourth home run of the season to left field to complete the feat.
McGeary finished the day 4-for-5 with two doubles and a home run with two runs scored and a run driven in while Farmer was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two runs driven in.
Sophomore
Jordan Stubbings got things started in the bottom of the first with a three-run home run to left field to give Colorado Mesa a 3-0 lead. The home run was his 13
th of the season and scored DeMarco and Douglas on the play.
In the bottom of the fifth inning,
Spencer Bramwell belted a two-run home run to left field that scored McGeary. It was his sixth home run of the season and gave the Mavericks an 8-1 lead.
Bramwell finished the day 3-for-3 with a run scored and two runs driven in.
The RMAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year
Andrew Morris got the start and pitched well enough to earn his fifth win of the season. Morris (5-1) allowed four runs on seven hits, walked four and struck out three in five and two-thirds innings.
A trio of relievers combined to allow just two hits, walked three and struck out three.
Colorado Mesa improved to 42-9 on the season while CSU-Pueblo falls to 26-24.
The Mavericks will play at 3pm tomorrow against an opponent yet to be determined at this time.
