Mavs Season Ends in Heartbreaking Overtime Loss to Westminster

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – After trailing by four goals the Mavericks willed back into the game and took a two goal lead with 13:12 remaining in regulation before the Griffins recorded three straight goals including a game winning goal with 28 second remaining in overtime to win the RMAC Tournament Championship.

The Mavericks reached the final game of the tournament for the fourth consecutive year but fell for the first time to the Griffins of Westminster.

The Mavericks placed four on the All-Tournament team which included Michael Marino, Jack Griffin, Joe Wulforst IV, and Ryder Clark.

In this final game senior Brandon Wilson led the Mavericks with four points that was made up of two goals and two assists. In his final game as a Maverick Jack Griffin recorded three goals, three ground balls, and caused one turnover. Matt Funkhouser caused a team high two turnovers and totaled three ground balls while Marino led the team with four ground balls and won 13-of-21 faceoffs.

Nick Wilson played every minute as goalkeeper for the Mavericks and recorded 11 saves.

The Griffins were quick to put themselves on the board as they scored less than two minutes into the game, however the Mavericks put themselves up by one goal after Johnny Cary and Griffin recorded back-to-back goals. These Maverick goals were answered by a 5-0 Griffin run that put the Mavs down 6-2 with 12:15 remaining in the second quarter.

Matt Funkhouser recorded a goal with 7:54 left to play in the half that started a 6-0 run that lasted until the opening minutes of the final quarter.

In that run Wilson and Jack Griffin recorded two goals each and the Maverick defense allowed no goals in the third quarter. Griffin's third goal of the game and final goal of the run came from a man-up opportunity which put the Mavericks up 8-6 with 13:12 remaining in regulation. Westminster closed the game with two consecutive goals to send the Mavericks into their first overtime game of the season.

In overtime Marino won the only faceoff which allowed Cary and Wulforst IV to get shots off that were both unable to find the back of the net. The Griffins regained possession, but RMAC Midfielder of the Year Jack Griffin caused a turnover that allowed the Mavericks one more possession. Wulforst got another shot off but it was too high.

The Griffins were quick to transition after Wulforst's empty shot and recorded the game winning goal with less than thirty second to play which secured them the 2019 Tournament Championship.

The Mavericks completed their season 10-8.
