Mavs Set Program Record with 14th Win

Mavs advance to play Lindenwood Friday 7 pm CDT

St. Charles, Mo. - In Thursday's quarterfinal game of the 2019 RMAC Tournament that Colorado Mesa Mavericks defeated Westminster 18-7 and recorded their 14th win of the season which set a new program record for most wins in a season. With this win the Mavericks advance to the semifinal game and will face second-seeded Lindenwood University. Game time is set for 7 pm Friday night.

Kenzie Blackwell led the team with seven points that included two goals and a career high five assists which is one assist away from tying a school record for assists in a game.

Paige Elliott, Mary Koch, and Olivia Hayden each recorded three goals while, Marissa Leonardi, Amanda Barton and Danielle Simpson were good for two apiece. Ashton Whittle completed the Mavericks scoring with a solo goal.

Hayden recorded 13 draw controls for the third time this season.

The Mavericks got out to a 3-0 lead thanks to Barton, Blackwell and Koch before Westminster recorded back-to-back goals to close the lead. The Mavericks and Griffin each exchanged three goal runs before the Mavs closed the first half on another three goal run which included Elliott and Koch's second goals of the game. The Mavericks held a 10-5 lead entering the locker-room.

Coming out of the locker room the Mavericks scored eight goals which were a part of a 11 goal run that started in the first half. In those eight goals that got the Mavericks out to a 17-5 lead Hayden recorded a hat trick along with Elliott and Koch notching their final goals to complete their respective hat tricks.

Whittle recorded the Mavericks' last goal of the game but Westminster had the final say as they recorded the final goal of the game with one minute remaining. The Mavericks improved to 14-2 on the season and extended their win streak to four with this win.

A Look at Tomorrow's Game

The Mavericks will face Lindenwood tomorrow night at 7 pm in the second semifinal game of the night. As the No. 2 seed Lindenwood received a bye from the quarterfinal games. The defending RMAC Tournament Champions have put together a 15-1 season. Their only loss comes from a conference matchup against Regis as they fell, 11-5. They went 8-1 in RMAC games to earn the No. 2 seed.

The Mavericks saw Lindenwood back on March 9 and lost by a slim three goals, 18-15.

The Lions are led by First Team All-RMAC member Hailey Gallant who has recorded a team high 52 points (32 goals and 20 assists). Carly Fedorowski who also picked up First Team honors has recorded a team-leading 36 goals this season.

In the last meeting between these two team it was pretty even offensively as the Mavericks totaled 28 shots to the Lions 29 and recorded one more shot on goal than the Lions (24-23). Colorado Mesa outed them in ground balls picked up 31 to their 27 but committed too many fouls that allowed Lindenwood to go 9-of-13 from free position shots.
