Great Eight

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Eight is great.

The No. 1 Colorado Mesa baseball team won their eighth straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season championship after a 9-6 win over the Dixie State Trailblazers on Thursday evening at Suplizio Field.

The title is the 26th overall RMAC regular season championship and will give the Mavericks hosting duties for next week's Conference Tournament which will begin on Wednesday May 8.

Andrew Morris earned a win for the fourth consecutive week. Morris (4-1) allowed six runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out seven in the effort.

The bullpen duo of Ryan Overboe and Will Dixon were outstanding. Overboe allowed just a single in his two and a third innings of work followed by a perfect inning and a third from Dixon.

Dixon, a senior, earned his RMAC-leading eighth save.

Senior Dominic DeMarco delivered the big blow in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run bomb down the right field line. The home run was his eighth of the season and gave the Mavericks a 7-5 lead in the game.

The Mavericks had three triples in the game as Josh Shapiro, Caleb Farmer and Jordan Stubbings all hit three-baggers.

Farmer finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and two runs driven in while Shapiro went 1-for-2 with three runs scored and his 11th stolen base.

Stubbings went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

The Mavericks are now 39-8 on the season and move to 26-6 in the conference while the Trailblazers fall to 32-15 on the year and 22-11 in the RMAC.

Colorado Mesa will host Dixie State tomorrow night for the annual Fireworks game at Suplizio Field beginning at 6:05pm.
