Two Big Innings Propel #1 Mavericks in Sweep

DENVER, Colo. – The No. 1 Colorado Mesa baseball team is on the doorstep of another RMAC Championship after sweeping the MSU Denver Roadrunners 11-10 on Sunday at the Regency Athletic Complex.

The Mavericks now just need one win in the final four games of the season against Dixie State at Suplizio Field.

Colorado Mesa benefitted from a pair of big innings with none bigger than the first one. The Mavericks scored six runs in the opening frame, highlighted by a two-run double by Spencer Bramwell that brought home Haydn McGeary and Caleb Farmer, both of whom reached with RBI singles in the inning.

The Roadrunners answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning before Johnny Carr got one back in the third inning. Carr hit his first home run of the season to left field, giving the Mavericks a 7-3 lead.

MSU Denver got to within one run, for the first time, in the fourth inning after scoring three runs to make it 7-6.

Colorado Mesa had their second big inning in the eighth where they scored four runs. Spencer Bramwell hit a solo home run to left center with Hunter Douglas later executing a safety squeeze to make it 9-6.

Later in the inning, sophomore Jordan Stubbings stepped to the plate and hammered his 10th home run of the season with a two-run shot making it 11-7. The home run was Stubbings' third of the weekend.

MSU Denver scored two in the bottom half of the inning and one in the ninth but that was all they could muster in the loss.

Trevin Reynolds earned the win after pitching seven innings. Reynolds (3-1) allowed eight runs on 11 hits, walked three and struck out three.

Senior Will Dixon shut the door for his third save of the weekend. Dixon allowed one run on one hit and struck out one in the final inning of the game.

The Mavericks will take on Dixie State beginning on Thursday this week at 6:05pm at Suplizio Field.
