Mavericks cruise past Westminster for 12th win

Hayden sets draw control record while she and Leonardi net five goals a piece

SALT LAKE CITY— Marissa Leonardi and Olivia Hayden each scored five goals as seven different Mavericks scored in Colorado Mesa University's 20-5 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's lacrosse win at Westminster College on Saturday afternoon at Dumke Field.

The nation's 15th and Midwest Region's fourth-ranked Mavericks scored the game's first four goals and scored five straight at the end of the first half to build a 12-3 lead before tallying the final six markers to cruise to their 12th win in 14 games this year.  They also improved to 6-2 in RMAC play after their final road game of the regular season while the host Griffins fell to 3-8 overall and to 3-4 in the conference.

Leonardi and Paige Elliott both finished the afternoon with six points as Elliott, Kenzie Blackwell and Amanda Barton each registered three assists while Leonardi had one.

Meanwhile, Hayden had a monster game with 10 ground balls and a school-record 14 draw controls.  She and Sophie Zlatarich both recorded four caused turnovers as well.

Elliott and Danielle Simpson also had hat-tricks with three goals each.  Simpson also added two assists.

Karlie Hadden, who had two goals, Mary Koch and Ashton Whittle also scored for the Mavericks as CMU finished the game with a 42-15 advantage in shots after winning 20 of 27 draw controls while forcing 29 Griffin turnovers..

The Mavericks needed just 9:03 to open a 4-0 lead as Hayden scored the game's first two goals before Simpson and Elliott doubled the lead to four with 20:57 to go in the opening half.

The Griffins would score two of the next three to pull within 4-1 and 5-2 before goals by Simpson and Leonardi made it a 7-2 game.  After a Westminster man-up goal following the first of two yellow cards given to the Mavericks made it a 7-3 game, the Mavericks clamped down defensively as they added five goals while keeping the Griffins at bay over the final 17:23 of the first half.

After exchanging the first four goals of the second half, the Mavericks then scored the final six over the final 10-plus minutes to cruise to the victory, their tenth straight in the rivalry.

The Mavericks are scheduled to close out the regular season on Friday (Apr. 26) with a Senior Day game against Fort Lewis (2-7), which forfeited two RMAC games this weekend due to injuries.
