Mavericks Defeat Adams State, 17-5

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa Mavericks defeated the Adams State Grizzlies 17-5 Sunday morning in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game which was held at Walker Field. The Mavericks improved to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play while the Grizzlies fell to 3-6 and 0-3 in RMAC play. Nine different Mavericks recorded goals in this win and two players finished with a hat-trick.

Joe Wulforst IV finished with a game high four points (3 goals, 1 assist) and Carson Swarck registered the Mavericks' second hat-trick with three goals.

The Mavericks only lost one faceoff and went 24-of-25 with Michael Marino taking 21-of-22 attempts and Coopar Tokar owning 3-of-3. Marino totaled a game high 11 ground balls.

Christian Cherry and Nick Wilson split time in the net for the Mavericks and combined for seven total saves. Cherry recorded the start and was awarded the win while Wilson was good for five saves.

Connor Johnson the Adams State goalkeeper recorded 27 saves and played all 60 minutes for the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies never scored with an extra man after going blank on four opportunities.

During the first quarter the Mavericks outscored the Grizzlies 6-2 and scored three times on man-up opportunities. Carson Schwark recorded the first goal of the game which was man-up and Joe Wulforst IV found the back of the net to give the Mavericks a 4-1 lead with 8:08 remaining in the opening quarter. Brandon Wilson scored on the Mavs' third extra-man opportunity to give them the 6-2 lead.

Wulforst IV recorded two goals in the second quarter and the Mavericks allowed no goals to own an 11-2 lead at the break.

Ethan Grant hit the first goal out of the locker room and was followed by back-to-back goals from the Grizzlies' Riley Morrison. During the third quarter the Mavericks survived 1:30 of penalties and allowed no goals.

Holding a 14-4 lead entering the final quarter the Mavericks outscored the Grizzlies 3-2 and outlasted their final penalty which was 30 seconds to settle the score at 17-5.

Next Up

The Mavericks will celebrate the teams' seniors next Saturday in their final home game of the season against Westminster at 2 pm on Walker Field.
