SALT LAKE CITY— The Colorado Mesa University Maverick Beach Volleyball squad dropped both matches of the Utah Beach Classic tri-dual on Saturday here at the University of Utah's Ute Beach.
The Mavericks, now 3-8 on the season, fell 3-2 in heartbreaking fashion to the host Utes, who were playing their first ever home match in the 3-year history of the program, before falling 5-0 to Boise State University for the second time this season.
Against Utah, the Mavericks jumped out to 1-0 and 2-1 leads before the Utes came from behind with wins in the first and second flights to claim the team win.
The Mavericks picked up their two wins at No. 4 and No. 5 as
Magdalena Dabrowski and
Kerstin Layman came from a set down to defeat Kinga Windisch and Keana Smalls in three sets (12-21, 21-19, 15-11) in the No. 5 match to put the Mavericks on the board.
Holly Schmidt and
Ara Norwood then had a 21-19, 21-19 win over Phoebe Grace and Olivia Teerlink in the No. 4 match after the Utes had won at No. 3 to equal the score.
The Utes then won at No. 1 before Kenzie Koerber and Megan Yett finished off a 21-23, 21-12, 15-13 win over
Macie Lachemann and
Samantha Ritter in the deciding match. Ritter was playing for the first time this season.
Elsewhere, CMU's
Rachael Perrine and
Hannah Bokal scored a 17-21, 21-17, 15-13 exhibition win over a mixed-team duo of Utah's Alexa Van Komen and CMU's
Emily Tucker.
The Boise State match was more straight-forward as the Broncos swept all six matches, including an exhibition. Four of them were in straight sets.
Schmidt and Norwood, who are tied with Dabrowski and Layman for the lead the Mavericks with four wins this season, did win a set at No. 4.
Ashton Reese and
Jordan Cody did the same in their exhibition match.
The Mavericks will be in Tavares, Florida next weekend competing at the AVCA Small College Championships. Their opponents will be announced earlier in the week.
