GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 2 Colorado Mesa baseball team got back to their winning ways with a 12-0 win over the Adams State Grizzlies on Friday evening in the series opener at Suplizio Field.
AJ Landis was brilliant on the mound in his fifth start of the season. Landis (4-1) pitched seven shutout innings and allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out seven in just 86 pitches. It was his longest outing of his career and had a stretch where he retired 17 straight batters.
Dominic DeMarco paced the Mavericks offense, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and one driven in. He became the second Maverick this season to record three doubles in a game matching
Jordan Stubbings' performance at Regis.
Colorado Mesa scored in seven of the eight innings they batted in. Their biggest inning was the three run fourth inning that was highlighted by a
Haydn McGeary two-run double to left center that brought in
Chase Hamilton and DeMarco.
Hamilton was the only other Maverick to have multiple hits.
Colorado Mesa improved to 28-7 on the season and 16-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They moved back into a first-place tie with MSU Denver as they dropped a 9-8 decision to Dixie State on Friday afternoon in Denver.
The Mavericks and Grizzlies will resume their series tomorrow with a pair of seven inning games beginning at 1pm at Suplizio Field.
