Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader from Cougars

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – No. 2 Colorado Mesa swept a doubleheader from the Colorado Christian Cougars on Saturday afternoon at Suplizio Field in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action. The Mavericks improve to 25-4 on the season and 13-2 in the RMAC while Colorado Christian falls to 7-21 and 2-13 in the conference.

In game one, the Mavericks scored 22 runs on 18 hits in a 22-3 win over the Cougars. The 22 runs are a season-high for Colorado Mesa.

Freshman Isaac Hayen earned the win on the mound in his first start of his collegiate career. Hayen (1-0) allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits, walked one and struck out four while throwing 73 pitches.

Three relievers combined to pitch the final three innings and allowed just two hits while striking out three.

The six spot in the batting order produced for the Mavericks. The combination of Dominic DeMarco and Haydn McGeary went 4-for-5 with two home runs and eight runs driven in from that spot in the order. DeMarco hit a towering grand slam to right field for his fifth of the season while McGeary hit an absolute missile to center field that cleared the batters eye for his fifth of the season.

Jordan Stubbings finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs scored, two runs driven in and hit his third home run of the season.

In the night cap, the Mavericks scored seven runs in the first inning and cruised to a 14-3 win over Colorado Christian to sweep the doubleheader.

McGeary once again provided the fireworks as the freshman finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three runs driven in. He hit his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning, a line shot over the fence in right center.

Spencer Bramwell was the only other Maverick with multiple hits in the 13-hit barrage.

Senior Garrett Hutson picked up the win on the mound in his seventh start of the season. Hutson (5-0) pitched five shutout innings and allowed just four hits, walked two and struck out six in 70 pitches.

The two teams will conclude the series with a single nine-inning game at noon from Suplizio Field.
