COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Behind a career high night from Marissa Leonardi the Colorado Mesa Mavericks improved to 9-1 on the season and 3-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Leonardi recorded a career high six goals while senior Olivia Hayden and Amanda Barton each recorded a hat trick. This was Hayden's eighth hat trick of the season while Barton recorded her first of the year and tied a career high.
After getting outscored in the second half 10-9 the Mavs were able to outlast the Mountain Lions and secure their perfect road record at 3-0 defeating University of Colorado Colorado Springs 19-15 for their third RMAC victory this season.
The Mavericks limited the Mountain Lions to just five goals in the first half and jumped out to a 7-3 lead with 13:06 remaining in the first half. In those seven goals the Mavericks' scored three times off of free position goals and Leonardi already recorded a hat trick and recorded an assisted on one other goal.
The Mountain Lions recorded two goals in the final minute of the first half to reach five, but the Mavericks had already registered 10.
Leonardi recorded the first three goals of the second half and gave the Mavericks a 13-6 advantage with 23:14 remaining in the second half. The Mavericks never let the Mountain Lions get within five goals until the final six minutes when UCCS scored five unanswered goals to get within four but to the Mavericks advantage the clock expired and Colorado Mesa won 19-15.
Notable Performances
Erin Koehler become the Mavericks' all-time single caused turnover leader with 40 this season. Hayden sits second with 39 caused turnovers this year.
Lula Mitchell recorded three saves and now has a 7-0 record when in the net.
Hayden is the Mavericks' single season ground ball leader with 50 total this season.
